We’ve got a new venture at Kenny Waste Management: we’ve started to make our own skips! Instead of buying them from a supplier, we’re now manufacturing super-robust, Kenny-branded skips ourselves.
It was time to refresh our stock of skips, which we do periodically to make sure they’re in tip-top condition. Thanks to increased business, we also needed to add to our stock. We realised that there was a compelling case for manufacturing rather than procuring our new fleet.
A skip needs to be as robust as possible; and by making them ourselves, we can ensure that they meet our exacting specifications. There isn’t a national standard for skip manufacture; however, we follow the guidelines set out by HSE and the industry standards used by the Container Handling Equipment Manufacturers Association (CHEM).
For example, rather than following the usual method of tag welding around certain joints, we fully weld all the joints for extra strength. When you’re lifting a fully-loaded skip, it’s good to know that the manufacturer has taken the belt-and-braces approach!
As well as being tough, our new skips also look great. They have a highly visible yellow finish, with our details clearly marked on the sides. Kenny skips are easy to spot, and will look smart on your building site or driveway. We’re producing our own builders skips and roll-on-roll-off skips, and as we gradually add and replace where necessary to all our existing stock.
Bringing skip manufacture in-house is also part of Kenny Waste Management’s social enterprise Driving Change. We’re providing work for local welders and fabricators, and we’re buying the steel from a Manchester supplier. Through Driving Change, we aim to bring as much as we can to the local economy, and this new strand to our business will create more work.
